A man who had to have his arm amputated following an accident in his workplace could be in line for a large compensation payout.
Cafer Sonmez, 55, was working at Kebabery Wholesale in 2004 when a meat mixing machine he was cleaning crushed his right arm, the Hackney Gazette reports.
The damage was so severe that he had to have the limb amputated.
In a new development, Judge Gareth Hawkesworth has now ruled that Mr Sonmez’s employers were 80 per cent to blame for the incident and that they should have taken more care to ensure that health and safety regulations were adhered to.
A claim for damages will now be assessed and ruled upon at a later date, if an out-of-court settlement is not reached in the meantime.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, six million working days were lost to injuries in 2007-08, with 299,000 reportable injuries occurring.

A woman whose husband was killed in an accident at work has appeared at the high court in a bid to claim compensation from his company.
Dean Thomas, 42, was killed after being crushed in a hydraulic lifting device in 2003, which Nicola Thomas claims happened because another employee pushed "the wrong button", the Forester reports.
However, although JR Crompton has admitted primary liability, it maintains that Mr Thomas was partly responsible for his own death because he was not standing in a safe area when the button was pressed.
Ms Thomas’s solicitors deny that he was to blame, calling him "an exemplary employee", and have launched a claim for £500,000 in compensation.
It is expected that the case will close on Friday (September 26th).
Following a workplace accident, a compensation claim can be made if it can be proved that employers breached this duty of care and that this resulted in accident or injury.
In most cases, a claim must be made within three years from the date of the accident.

A care officer has secured compensation following an accident in which she suffered a fracture to her right heel bone and a compression fracture to her spine.
The woman, who is employed by Walsall metropolitan borough council, was attending a charity event in the organisation’s car park when the incident occurred, Workplace Law Network reports.
She was using a trampoline when she lost her balance and attempted to step off the piece of equipment, landing heavily on the concrete ground beneath her.
In a recent development, the employee received £5,600 in a settlement with the local authority, which is headquartered in Walsall’s Civic Centre.
The council had denied liability, saying the employee involved was told to complete a risk assessment in relation to using the trampoline.
However, she denied ever receiving the instruction and claimed she was not present when the piece of equipment was set up in the car park.
