A woman has been awarded compensation of £300,000 after her husband died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
Michael Streets left school in 1963 and got a job as an apprentice oil fitter at Fawley Refinery, the Southern Daily Echo reports.
Although he left the company in 1975, Mr Streets said he recalled there being no safety measures in place to protect employees against the danger of asbestos. In fact, he said in a statement before he died that workers used to have ’snowball’ fights with the fibres and that the air was thick with deadly dust.
Mr Streets contracted mesothelioma and died in December 2007. His widow Francis took legal action against the Esso Petroleum Company and it recently admitted liability.
She is to be awarded £300,000 in compensation for her loss.
Asbestos-related cancers typically affect five times as many men as women because they are often the result of working in industries that used the materials in the 1960s, Cancer Research UK attests.

Compensation is to be paid to the family of a man who died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
The unnamed victim took a job in a factory between 1970 and 1976 and despite the knowledge that asbestos was dangerous, was not given any protective equipment or warnings about the dangers of exposure in the course of his work.
He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2005 and decided to pursue a claim against his former employers. Although the man died before it could be completed, his family pursued the case.
The company’s insurers have now agreed to a payout of £162,000 for the family’s loss.
Asbestos-related industrial diseases typically affect five times as many men as women, according to Cancer Research UK. Figures published by the Centre for the Study of Environmental Cancer show that Britain has one of the highest incidences of mesothelioma in the world.
Anyone affected should contact a solicitor to see if they are eligible to make a claim for compensation.

A woman has won a long legal battle against the company where her husband contracted the deadly asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
Frederick Hughes of Ashton-under-Lyne worked at engineering firm Vernon & Roberts during the 1960s, where he inhaled asbestos as he dismantled buildings and equipment, the Manchester Evening News attests.
He died in 2001 and his widow Dorothy decided to pursue a compensation claim against the company. Although a judge ruled in her favour four years ago, she then had to sue Vernon & Roberts’ directors because its insurers had ceased trading and could not meet the payout.
This week, she was finally successful and has been awarded £60,000 in compensation from the personal accounts of the company’s former directors.
"People should have accepted their responsibilities sooner. I am relieved now that it is over," commented Ms Hughes.
According to a paper published by the Centre for the Study of Environmental Cancer, Britain has one of the highest incidences of mesothelioma, with 30 per million per year.

A woman who lost her husband to the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma could be in line to receive record compensation after suing the companies where he was exposed.
Alex Devoy died only six months after being diagnosed with the disease and not only did Carole Devoy lose a husband, she also lost a carer as she suffers from Parkinson’s Disease.
Ms Devoy was left having to pay professionals over £2,000 a month to look after her as her condition continued to deteriorate.
She took legal action against a Merchant Navy shipbuilder –- for whom her husband worked as a fitter between 1955 and 1959 – and an engineering company, where he worked between 1960 and 1970.
At a high court hearing this month, the companies admitted liability and have agreed to pay Ms Devoy compensation. However, it must now be decided how much she should receive for her loss and the reduction in care that she also suffered.
Asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma typically affect five times as many men as women because they were more likely to be involved in manual work where the fibre was in the air.

A woman is asking anyone who may have worked with her husband to come forward in order to assist her with a compensation claim relating to asbestos.
George Sharpe, 67, died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma last November and it believed that this is the result of him breathing in the deadly building material during his working life, GetReading.co.uk reports.
He had worked at a number of companies in his lifetime, including Burret and Daly, Cook JT, Hall and Co (Thames Valley), FM Gant (Builders) and WD Clayton Construction. His widow Ann Sharpe is asking anyone who worked at these companies with her husband to come forward so her solicitors can ascertain where he was exposed to asbestos.
She then hopes to pursue a compensation claim against the responsible company’s insurers.
Many people in the building trade were exposed to asbestos in the late 20th century, despite firms knowing the associated risks. Mesothelioma affects five times as many men as women as a result of this.
