The family of a man who was crushed to death in a workplace accident in 2006 have been paid compensation for their loss.
Jose Maria Martos Fernandez was working as a fisherman at a harbour in Lochinver, Scotland, when the accident occurred, the Aberdeen Press and Journal reports.
The men were unloading boxes of fish using a winch when a wire rope snapped. Mr Fernandez was hit on the head and shoulders by the cargo and he died at the scene.
After an investigation into the incident, it was concluded that regular checks on the state of the rope, which had become corroded, would have revealed that it was unsuitable and the death could have been avoided.
Lagun Talde, the company which owned the boat, was prosecuted under health and safety regulations and was ordered to pay £50,000 in compensation to Mr Fernandez’s family.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, 229 workers were killed at work in 2007-08.

A woman who was injured after lifting heavy boxes at work has been paid compensation.
Yvonne Parker, 41, strained a muscle in her shoulder while lifting goods at Domnick Hunter Technologies, Sheffield, in 2006.
However, the boxes exceeded health and safety guidelines at 22kg each and Ms Parker said she was not given the appropriate training to do the work.
"My injuries are still causing me pain and discomfort months after they were originally caused at work. After my experiences I want businesses to do more to protect their employees. My accident was preventable," she commented to the Sheffield Telegraph.
Ms Parker has now been paid almost £2,000 in compensation from the company, which she still works for.
According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive, 2.1 million people were suffering from an illness they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work during 2007-08.
Meanwhile, six million working days were lost from workplace injuries during the same period.
