A woman has been awarded compensation of £300,000 after her husband died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
Michael Streets left school in 1963 and got a job as an apprentice oil fitter at Fawley Refinery, the Southern Daily Echo reports.
Although he left the company in 1975, Mr Streets said he recalled there being no safety measures in place to protect employees against the danger of asbestos. In fact, he said in a statement before he died that workers used to have ’snowball’ fights with the fibres and that the air was thick with deadly dust.
Mr Streets contracted mesothelioma and died in December 2007. His widow Francis took legal action against the Esso Petroleum Company and it recently admitted liability.
She is to be awarded £300,000 in compensation for her loss.
Asbestos-related cancers typically affect five times as many men as women because they are often the result of working in industries that used the materials in the 1960s, Cancer Research UK attests.

Compensation is to be paid to the family of a man who died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
The unnamed victim took a job in a factory between 1970 and 1976 and despite the knowledge that asbestos was dangerous, was not given any protective equipment or warnings about the dangers of exposure in the course of his work.
He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2005 and decided to pursue a claim against his former employers. Although the man died before it could be completed, his family pursued the case.
The company’s insurers have now agreed to a payout of £162,000 for the family’s loss.
Asbestos-related industrial diseases typically affect five times as many men as women, according to Cancer Research UK. Figures published by the Centre for the Study of Environmental Cancer show that Britain has one of the highest incidences of mesothelioma in the world.
Anyone affected should contact a solicitor to see if they are eligible to make a claim for compensation.

The parents of a girl who died after being given a massive overdose of radiation have been given permission to sue an NGS trust for clinical negligence.
Lisa Norris, 16, was having treatment for a brain tumour at the Beatson cancer centre in Glasgow in 2006, but doctors mistakenly gave her too much radiation. They then stopped the treatment after discovering the error.
Her parents Ken and Liz claim that Lisa would have lived had doctors not stopped the treatment and are taking legal action against NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
"The health authorities should be called to account for what happened to Lisa," Mr Norris said.
Experts opined after Lisa’s death that she should have had a 60 per cent chance of survival from her cancer if she had been treated properly.
The NHS trust declined to comment on the case or the legal action.
According to Cancer Research UK, approximately 4,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with brain and central nervous system tumours every year.

Anyone who has been affected by exposure to asbestos should seek legal advice in order to bring a claim against their employers before the disease takes hold.
This is the advice of solicitor Tim Humpage, who told the East Anglian Evening Star that people should not feel bad about doing so, because victims are entitled to compensation.
"In the vast majority of cases exposure was because of negligence so it is right to take action," he commented.
Mr Humpage added that this could ensure a payout during the victim’s lifetime, or at least the peace of mind that their loved ones will be cared for after they are gone.
He said that people should also not be put off claiming if the company where asbestos exposure occurred has gone out of business, since compensation could be provided by the government.
Mesothelioma is an asbestos-related cancer that affects the pleural cells which cover the surface of the lung cavity.
According to Cancer Research UK, it affects five times more men than women in the UK.
