A child who was left with cerebral palsy after hospital staff failed to deliver her quickly enough has been awarded millions of pounds in compensation.
Elise Frith, now six, was born at Milton Keynes Hospital, but although her mother Yelena had been suffering from abdominal pains, an emergency Caesarean was not performed until more than two hours after a problem was detected.
The child was deprived of oxygen and now has mobility and communication problems as a result of her cerebral palsy, Milton Keynes Today reports.
Milton Keynes Hospital admitted that its staff had been negligent in not taking Ms Frith in for surgery sooner and this week approved a compensation payout that, although confidential, is believed to amount to millions of pounds.
According to the charity Scope, one in every 400 children in the UK is born with cerebral palsy.
This is most commonly the result of failure of a part of the brain to develop and can be caused by a lack of oxygen in the womb, as was the case here.

A company in County Durham has banned its employees from using mobile phones while they are at the wheel.
Workers at the 3M manufacturing plant in Newton Aycliffe have been told they cannot use mobiles, or even hands-free devices, while using their cars for business.
The company has been running a child safety road campaign since 2005, which has involved the distribution of 95,000 high visibility vests to young people in a bid to reduce the number of accidents on roads in the area.
Doug Mitchell, 3M’s managing director, said there is compelling evidence that using mobiles while driving impairs a motorist’s performance.
Katie Shephard, fundraising manager for the road safety charity Brake, agreed: "Research has shown that it is the phone conversation that distracts and kills, regardless of whether a hands-free kit is used or not."
She added: "We hope other companies will follow 3M’s lead and introduce this ban as part of their health and safety policy."

Whilst most of us have been staying in with the doors firmly closed the team at Pryers Solicitors LLP have been out and about giving up precious time for voluntary work for local charity, York Cares. Marie Brasnett, Sally Roberts, Alex McKnight and Julia Willoughby-Smith left work a few hours early last week and braved the weather to spend the early evening planting trees and laying wood chip paths at West Bank Park in Acomb, York.
Principal, Ian Pryer said, “I’ve always been a huge supporter of giving something back to the community and York Cares offers the ideal opportunity for Pryers to make a real difference to the people of York. It has proved a great success in terms of team building and I have a long list of volunteers for next time”. For solicitor Alex McKnight this was a first in terms of out of office voluntary work and it has certainly made the right impact. As he said, “This is the most selfless act I’ve done in the last 35 years!.” York-based Pryers Solicitors LLP are specialist in Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury, with a reputation for excellence in these specialist fields.
