A man has been awarded £1.4 million in compensation after suffering a stroke following his wrongful imprisonment for murder.
Ellis Sherwood had spent 11 years in jail after being convicted of murdering a Cardiff newsagent in 1988.
The compensation was awarded to him by the Home Office after it was proven in court that his stroke was a direct result of the drug abuse he took part in during his time in prison, reports the South Wales Echo.
Mr Sherwood has previously been given compensation by the South Wales Police for the miscarriage of justice he suffered.
In October 2006 he received £200,000 from the police force after his conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal.
Last week, the Lowestoft Journal reported that Suffolk Constabulary have paid out almost £600,000 in compensation claims against them in the past five years.
The claims included cases of wrongful arrest, physical injury and damage to property.

A man who was in prison for 15 years for a crime he did not commit is claiming £1 million in compensation for the injustice.
Andrew Adams, 39, was jailed in 1993 for the murder of Alfred Royal in Newcastle, but his conviction was overturned in January 2007.
He thought he would be paid compensation for the miscarriage of justice, but was told he would receive nothing because he could not show that the conviction came as a result of new evidence.
Now, Mr Adams is taking the case to the court of appeal in a bid to get a payout for the 15 years he spent behind bars.
"All I’m asking for is to get back what was taken away from me when I was put in prison," he told the Chronicle Live.
The victim claims that he did not receive appropriate representation at his trial and that his lawyers had not used a number of facts that could have led to his acquittal.
Anyone who is the victim of a miscarriage of justice is eligible for compensation if new evidence comes to light that proves they were not responsible for the original crime.

A woman who worked as a dinner lady is seeking hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation after she was seriously injured by a student who was playing tag.
Michelle Orchard was walking along a footpath at Corfe Hills School in Dorset in 2004 when 13-year-old Sebastian Lee stumbled and ran into her, the Telegraph reports.
The back of his head hit her face and she suffered a brain injury, partially paralysing her and breaking her nose and teeth.
Ms Orchard has been unable to return to work and said she still suffers seizures following the incident, which she said changed her life forever.
She took her case to London’s court of appeal, but Lord Justice Waller, Lord Justice Rimer and Lord Justice Aikens have reserved their decision regarding compensation to a later date.
Anyone who suffers a personal injury as a result of an accident that was not their fault should seek legal action within three years of the event in order to be eligible for compensation.

A father has been paid £41,500 after he sustained injuries to his face when a goalpost fell on him.
Michael Hall, 45 and from Oldham, was staying with his son in a caravan park in the Lake District, where he was playing football on a makeshift pitch.
However, the goalposts had not been properly pegged down and they fell on Mr Hall, causing him what were described as "nasty" injuries to his jaw and face.
He took legal action against Holker Estate Company, which owns the Old Park Wood caravan park.
Although judges at Oldham county court ruled in 2007 that he should not receive compensation, a hearing at London’s court of appeal overturned this verdict and Mr Hall will now be paid £41,500.
It was decided that if a daily inspection on the pegs in the goal had been carried out, attendants would have noticed that pegs had been removed by campers and that the goalposts were not stable.
Personal injury occurs when a person has suffered some form of injury, either physical or psychological, as the result of an accident or medical malpractice.
Under the limitation rules, where an individual is bringing a claim for compensation, court proceedings must be started within three years of the date of the accident, failing which the claimant will lose the right to bring their claim.

A woman who worked as an NHS nurse has received damages after the court of appeal ruled that her former employers were partly responsible for an injury she received.
Donna Jane Egan, 39, was a senior nurse at Manchester Royal Infirmary in June 2003, where she was using a hoist to lift a patient into the bath.
However, Manchester Evening News reports, the hoist became jammed and stopped suddenly, causing Ms Egan to seriously hurt her back.
She was off work for two years and although a previous hearing ruled that her employers were not responsible, she took further legal action.
Now, Lady Justice Smith has overturned that verdict, stating that the Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust was 50 per cent liable because it should had measures in place to avoid the accident.
Ms Egan will now be paid compensation that is likely to amount to tens of thousands of pounds.
There is legislation in place to ensure employers provide protection against workplace injuries. Anyone who has been injured should speak to a legal representative as time limitations apply on the claims process.
