A man who suffered a head wound after being hit by a cherry picker outside a shop has been awarded a compensation payout.
Edwin Halsall, 63, was leaving a newsagent in Broomhill when the machinery swung around and hit him on the head, the Sheffield Telegraph reports.
He was left with severe cuts to his scalp and intense headaches.
“The picker was lowered into me, leaving me needing glue stitches in the gash on my head,” Mr Halsall commented.
He took legal action against John Comaish Advertising Services for negligence since the cherry picker was unsupervised.
The firm’s insurers have now admitted liability and agreed to an undisclosed payout as part of an out-of-court settlement.
Under health and safety regulations, contractors must put up danger signs for passers-by to avoid causing them injuries and must make sure that the machinery being used is out of range of people in the street.

A toddler is to be paid compensation after being successful in her claim against a hotel chain.
Sheonaidh Nisbet, three, had been on holiday at the Crieff Hydro hotel in Perthsire when she tripped over a metal drain cover in the gardens.
She fell and badly cut her chin, which resulted in her needing paper stitches. She is also likely to be permanently scarred by the fall.
Through her parents, Sheonaidh took legal action against the hotel for failing in its duty of care.
"We have spent many happy times at Crieff Hydro and were saddened by their lack of concern following her injury," said her father William.
In a new development, BBC News reports that the hotel has agreed to a compensation payout as part of an out-of-court settlement for Sheonaidh, which is believed to be in the region of £2,500.
Hotel owners and shopkeepers have a duty of care to the general public to ensure that there is nothing that could cause slips, trips and falls. If this expectation is not fulfilled and a person is injured as a result of a slip, trip or fall, they may have a right to claim accident compensation.

A woman who fell in a pub’s smoking area is to receive £18,000 in compensation after she badly broke her leg.
Selina Gilder, 40, had been on a night out at the Albion Pub in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, when the accident occurred in October 2007.
She went out for a cigarette, but caught her heel in a piece of broken concrete and fell through an unlocked door.
Her leg was broken in two places and her injuries meant that she needed three operations and eight months off work.
Ms Gilder took legal action against the owners of the pub, alleging that the smoking area was badly lit and the floor surface was poor.
They have now admitted liability and have agreed to the compensation payout as part of an out-of-court settlement.
Under the Occupiers Liability Act 1957, owners of public places owe a duty of care to their visitors and must keep them reasonably safe. If this is not the case, anyone injured may be eligible to claim compensation, as was the case here.

A farmer’s wife who fell down a hole while demonstrating for a safety awareness day is to receive compensation.
Tania Foster was at a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) workshop in Churton when she failed to spot the uncovered drain, the Ellesmere Port Pioneer reports.
She fell down it and sustained permanent damage to her Achilles and metatarsal tendons. She now has to wear an ankle brace 24 hours a day.
Ms Foster took legal action against the HSE for failing to protect those at the workshop and for not removing an obvious hazard.
Although the organisation did not admit liability, it agreed to pay Ms Foster £25,000 for the pain and suffering she was caused as part of an out-of-court settlement.
Statistics published by the HSE show that agriculture and construction have the highest rates of fatal injury of all the industrial sectors, accounting for 46 per cent of all fatal injuries to workers in 2006 to 2007.

A man who now suffers from the painful condition Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (Havs) after operating tools at work has secured compensation for his pain and suffering.
Alexander Simpson, 60, worked with a vibrating grinder five days a week at West Cumberland Engineering until 2007.
He began to suffer pain and numbness in his hands and was diagnosed with Havs, which means he can no longer carry out simple tasks like gardening.
The victim took legal action against West Cumberland Engineering and the company recently admitted liability.
It has agreed to an undisclosed payout for Mr Simpson as part of an out-of-court settlement and has moved him to a different position within the company.
Mr Simpson said: "I decided to pursue compensation because I wanted to make sure I was moved on to a different job to prevent my condition from getting worse."
According to the Health and Safety Executive, five million workers are exposed to hand-arm vibration in the workplace.
