Payout for family who suffered burns on holiday

Compensation is to be paid to a family who sustained agonising burns after swimming in a hotel pool while on holiday.

Susan Austin and her partner Lee Sanders from Essex were among 33 Britons who suffered a reaction to chemicals in the pool at the Mitsis Roda Beach Hotel in Corfu, the Essex Echo reports.

They were left in so much pain that they could not put their clothes on over the broken skin. However, the hotel staff continued to put chemicals in the pool on a daily basis, even though many guests had already sustained burns.

After the holiday, 42 travellers took legal action against Thomas Cook for the pain they were caused.

They have now won their claim and are to receive an undisclosed sum in compensation from the tour operator.

Last month, the Daily Mail reported that £52,000 had been awarded to a child who suffered an electric shock in a hotel shower while on holiday in Kenya.

Widow secures compensation after teacher’s death

Widow secures compensation after teachers death

A woman who lost her husband to the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma has secured compensation of £290,000, it has emerged.

The widow, who has not been named, took legal action after her spouse died aged 61 after being exposed to the building material while teaching chemistry in East Sussex for 34 years.

He breathed in fibres and dust while using equipment for science demonstrations and experiments and died in September 2007.

The woman took legal action against East Sussex council and has now secured a payout.

"My husband just didn’t know what danger he was exposing himself to on a daily basis," she commented.

A council spokesperson said the authority strives to provide a safe working environment for staff and pupils.

If a person or their surviving partner can prove they were exposed to asbestos as a result of negligence, a claim for compensation may be made as a result and the advice of a solicitor should be sought.

Man diagnosed with mesothelioma seeks compensation

A man who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma is involved in a legal battle to secure compensation.

John Mullen is seeking ex-colleagues from Insulation & Partitions – a firm which is no longer in operation – in an effort to make its former liability insurers pay out.

The 61-year-old claims he was exposed to the harmful insulating material asbestos during an 18-month stint at the organisation, the Coventry Telegraph reports.

According to the Mr Mullens, he was involved in cutting and drilling sheets of the substance on a daily basis when he worked for the business from the age of 17.

He stated: "Nobody said anything about health and safety. We were not warned and there were other young lads – about 15 of them – who worked with me [who] will have the same condition as me."

A type of cancer, mesothelioma affects the cells that cover the outer surface of bodily organs.
