A surgeon could be facing legal action over a death in hospital after new evidence came to light regarding the incident.
William John Martin, 55, died in 2001 during an operation at the City Hospital, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
Surgeon Dick Donaldson tore the victim’s portal vein and hepatic artery while performing a bladder removal procedure and it is claimed by Mr Martin’s family that this was a result of clinical negligence.
The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has said it is looking into the death again and may formally reopen the investigation, leaving Mr Martin’s family free to pursue legal action if the surgeon is found to be negligent.
A spokesperson said: "The PPS confirmed that in light of new information which has been brought to its attention it will be meeting with police this week."
Clinical negligence occurs when a professional in the health service provides care that is deemed to be below standard and this causes physical injury, death or distress.
Negligence may occur from delay or failure to diagnose a condition, delay or failure to treat a condition, when a treatment goes wrong, use of the wrong treatment, or failure to obtain consent.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating following an incident in which 21 people were injured on a fairground ride in Blackpool.
It is thought one of the carts on the Big Dipper ride stopped and was shunted from behind by another carriage.
Several of the people on board were taken to hospital suffering from injuries to their necks and backs, as well as to their faces.
Both the Pleasure Beach authorities and the HSE are now investigating the incident and the ride will remain closed until it can be established what happened.
"It’s very sad for us to realise that some people have been injured and we wish them well and a very speedy recovery," said a Pleasure Beach spokesperson.
Anyone who is involved in a theme park accident and sustains personal injury as a result of a ride’s safety standards being inadequate could be in a position to make a no win, no fee claim for compensation and should seek the advice of a solicitor.

A man who was badly hurt in a car crash is seeking £300,000 in compensation from the driver he holds responsible.
David Frost was driving in West Sussex in 2006 when he was hit head-on by Scott Warren’s VW Caddy, Get Surrey reports.
Mr Frost had to undergo ten operations for injuries including fractured vertebrae, fractured thighs and damage to his hands.
He has now launched legal action against Mr Warren, claiming that he had been driving too fast, was over the drink drive limit and had been on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.
The victim is hoping to claim compensation because he faces more medical treatment in the future and is still unfit to work even three years later.
Anyone injured in a car accident should seek the advice of a solicitor if the accident was not their fault, as they may be able to claim compensation from the responsible party’s insurance.

A pathologist could face a multi-million pound lawsuit from up to 8,000 individuals after the accuracy of his reports came into question.
Dr Rajgopal Menon, a medical professional trained in Glasgow, was deemed by a recent inquiry to have incorrectly missed cancer diagnoses, reports the Evening Times.
The cases, which number more than 24,000, are to undergo re-examination stretching back over more than a decade.
Dr Menon’s licence permitting him to work as a pathologist has been suspended.
After working his first year at the Southern General Hospital, he moved to the US and also worked in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. He trained at Glasgow University between 1955 and 1961.
In related news, the misdiagnosis rate of a Finnish pathologist working at Cork University Hospital was found to be six times higher than average, according to the Irish Independent.

The Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust is facing compensation claims of more than £6 million, it has been reported.
According to the Daily Post, the trust has set aside £6.5 million to deal with the claims, three of which are expected to result in exceed £1 million.
Most of the cases are believed to relate to personal injury claims resulting from road traffic accidents and injuries sustained during the course of duty, while a small number of claims were made following an assault.
A total of 13 of the outstanding cases being dealt with by the trust are for clinical negligence brought about by hospital patients.
Dave Galligan, head of health for Unison in Wales, commented: "I think people are more conscious about making a claim now if they have an accident at work. They tend to follow them up because so many can result in the end of people’s careers."
