A family has been awarded £410,000 in compensation after a woman died due to errors during a caesarean section.
Joanne Lockham, 45, had been admitted to Stoke Mandeville Hospital at Aylesbury in October 2007 and staff made the decision to give her a caesarean when her baby’s heartbeat dropped.
The patient was put under a general anaesthetic, but doctors mistakenly inserted the oxygen tube into her oesophagus and not her windpipe. She was deprived of oxygen for half an hour and her heart stopped a minute after the baby was born.
Ms Lockham’s life support was turned off two days later.
Her husband Peter decided to sue Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust after it admitted liability for the death and for "serious failings" in Ms Lockham’s care.
Mr Justice Burnett has now approved a compensation settlement of £410,000 for the loss and to cover the long-term care needs of the baby.
According to Babycentre.co.uk, approximately one in four pregnant women gives birth by caesarean every year.

Compensation has finally been awarded to a girl who was the victim of an electric shock while on holiday.
Alexandra Miles, then 11, had travelled with her family to the four-star Kilifi Beach resort in Kenya in 2005, the Daily Mail reports.
The family had been worried about power cuts and water shortages during their stay, but on Christmas Day, Alexandra was given a near-fatal electric shock by the shower in the hotel room.
She sustained trauma to her heart and was left partially paralysed.
The family took legal action after the hotel only offered a free meal in compensation for the child’s injuries and a payout of £52,000 has now been agreed.
"We were terrified we were going to lose our only child. It was just appalling," commented Alexandra’s mother Joanna.
Anyone affected by an injury while abroad should seek legal advice, as they may be able to claim compensation from their package tour holiday operator.

A woman whose baby was stillborn has been awarded compensation after hospital staff admitted to failings in his care.
Arlien Middleton’s son Kenneth died in October 2003 at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and letters from doctors revealed that his heart had not been properly monitored, the Aberdeen Press and Journal reports.
Ms Middleton sought compensation from NHS Grampian, claiming that if she and the baby had been properly checked, she could have had an emergency Caesarean and Kenneth may have survived.
After a five-year battle, Ms Middleton was awarded £21,500 in compensation for the pain and suffering she was caused.
"It was never to do with the money. I didn’t care about the money. I just wanted an apology," she remarked.
NHS Grampian declined to comment on the individual case.
Clinical negligence occurs when a professional in the health service provides care that is deemed to be below standard and this causes physical injury, death or distress.
Compensation may be claimed as a result, as was the case here.

A young girl left with permanent disabilities has won the right to a compensation payout for the injuries she sustained.
Ayesha Canning-Kishver, now 11, was born prematurely in 1997, the BBC reports.
However, eight days later, doctors found the child in a serious condition in the intensive care facilities and she had to be resuscitated in a manner that was described as "aggressive".
In a new development, judges at the high court have ruled that if hospital staff had monitored Ayesha properly, the "drastic falls in the heart and respiratory rates" would have resulted in the child being seen by a doctor much earlier.
As a result of the brain damage she sustained, Ayesha will now receive a payout of £20,000 from Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as a further £30,000 to cover past expenses.
If sub-standard care during pregnancy or birth can be proved to have caused injury or disability, compensation can be sought to cover the costs of care to ensure an improved quality of life and financial security for the lifetime of the child.
Usually, expert medical opinion will be required on the standard of care received and this will be based on clinical examination and the medical records of the mother and baby.

A woman who became pregnant despite being sterilised has won a substantial compensation payout.
In an out-of-court settlement, Milton Keynes Hospital agreed to pay Mirella De Maio £20,000.
Ms De Maio already had five children when she learnt she was expecting another child, despite having undergone the procedure.
She had decided against having more children after her youngest son, Gaetano, was born with a hole in his heart. She wanted to return to work, reports Milton Keynes Today.
Doctors discovered Ms De Maio, 39, was pregnant after she went to her local GP complaining of felling unwell.
Four months later, baby Nunzio was born. His other siblings are Gaetano, Francesco, Pasquale, Anna and Teresa.
A spokesman for the law firm representing Ms De Maio commented: "The case was won by clinical negligence lawyers who obtained expert evident to prove the failure of the sterilisation was due to a substandard operation rather than natural causes."
