A man who worked for Morrisons is suing the supermarket chain after suffering horrific injuries in the car park of one of its stores.
Kevin Brookshaw was arriving for a night shift at the Morrisons store in Crewe in December 2006 when the accident occurred, the Crewe Chronicle reports.
As he drove under the car park’s barrier, it suddenly swung forward and crashed through the windscreen of his car.
Mr Brookshaw’s facial injuries were so severe that his wife Pauline did not know him at first. He will never be able to eat or speak properly again and has to be fed through a tube.
"Kevin was literally unrecognisable. His face was entirely split down the middle and covered in blood," Mrs Brookshaw said.
At a recent hearing, Morrisons was fined for breaching health and safety regulations and has admitted liability for Mr Brookshaw’s injuries. It is thought that he will receive a substantial sum in compensation for his pain and suffering.
The supermarket chain said it has since changed the design of the gates on all its stores.
Anyone who is injured on supermarket premises because of the negligence of the occupier may be entitled to make a compensation claim and should seek the advice of a solicitor specialising in personal injury compensation claims.

A motorbike rider who had been battling for compensation after a crash in 2005 has secured a payout this week.
Earlier this month, the Shropshire Star reported that Simon Roger Powell, 45, had been near the Shropshire village of Cleobury Mortimer when he collided with another motorbike coming in the opposite direction.
He claimed that the other rider was in his path when he rounded a bend, causing him to crash and suffer head injuries.
Judge Sir Robert Nelson ruled this week that Neil Auden, the other rider, should have moved to his left instead of adopting emergency braking and that as such, he was responsible for the resulting crash.
The final sum of compensation has not yet been decided, but it is expected to be a seven-figure sum, the Stourbridge News attests.
Mr Powell said he is "delighted" with the result of his legal action.
"My family and I can now move forward from this horrific accident," he added.

A man who had to have his arm amputated following an accident in his workplace could be in line for a large compensation payout.
Cafer Sonmez, 55, was working at Kebabery Wholesale in 2004 when a meat mixing machine he was cleaning crushed his right arm, the Hackney Gazette reports.
The damage was so severe that he had to have the limb amputated.
In a new development, Judge Gareth Hawkesworth has now ruled that Mr Sonmez’s employers were 80 per cent to blame for the incident and that they should have taken more care to ensure that health and safety regulations were adhered to.
A claim for damages will now be assessed and ruled upon at a later date, if an out-of-court settlement is not reached in the meantime.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, six million working days were lost to injuries in 2007-08, with 299,000 reportable injuries occurring.

A farm worker has been awarded compensation for an accident which occurred while he was working on a farm.
Pawel Piasecki, a Polish student, was cutting wood on the property in North Yorkshire, owned by Adrian and Bridget Thornton-Berry.
The tractor-driven circular saw he was using jammed and he attempted to lubricate it while it was still moving, the Northern Echo reports.
As a result, the middle finger of his left hand was severed and his ring finger was reduced to a stump.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted the couple for breaching safety regulations and they were fined £3,000, as well as £1,000 in costs.
Mr Piasecki was also awarded the undisclosed sum in compensation.
HSE spokesperson Charlie Callis said: "The young man was shown how to use this machine and then very much left to get on with it. If he had been properly supervised, this horrific accident would not have resulted."
Farm workers, like construction workers, are at high risk of injury or death due to the fact that they are constantly operating heavy farm machinery.
If a compensation claim is made, it is the company’s insurers who would pay, including for loss of earnings as a result of the accident.
