Five people seek compensation over E.coli outbreak on Surrey farm

It has been confirmed that five people are seeking compensation from the owners of a Surrey farm where 64 people suffered E.coli poisoning.

According to the Telegraph, the victims who opt to take legal action against Godstone Farm could be awarded hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation.

Among them is 24-year-old Clare Zahra, who visited the farm in August and fell ill with vomiting and diarrhoea.

She said she had to take two weeks off work and has still not managed to go back full-time.

"Becoming ill brought my life to a standstill and I do not think the farm acted quickly enough to protect the public," she added.

Anger mounted after the E.coli outbreak came to light and it emerged that Godstone Farm stayed open for two weeks after the first evidence of the bug, unnecessarily exposing more people to it.

Seven per cent of E. coli victims go on to suffer permanent and severe kidney damage after exposure, according to the BBC.

Boy in line for compensation after bus accident

Boy in line for compensation after bus accident

A schoolboy could receive a six-figure sum in compensation after he was run over by a bus.

Luke Murtagh, now 15, had been running for the Arriva South London bus a moment after it had left the stop. Although he knocked on the window, the vehicle did not stop.

However, Luke’s trousers then got caught in the wheels and he was pulled underneath, causing injuries to his legs, spine and hips.

He had to have surgery and skin grafts following the accident and still suffers from nightmares because of the horror.

With the assistance of his family, he took legal action against Arriva, which admitted liability but disputed the amount of compensation he should receive.

A hearing is now to take place at a later date, but it is thought that Luke’s damages could amount to hundreds of thousands of pounds.

In June 2008, compensation was awarded to 15-year-old Dolly Hughes after she was run over by the back tyres of an Armchair Passenger Transport Company bus.

The driver had driven off before she had got on, claiming she had been causing trouble, an allegation which was later disproved.

Dinner lady seeks compensation after suffering brain injury

Dinner lady seeks compensation after suffering brain injury

A woman who worked as a dinner lady is seeking hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation after she was seriously injured by a student who was playing tag.

Michelle Orchard was walking along a footpath at Corfe Hills School in Dorset in 2004 when 13-year-old Sebastian Lee stumbled and ran into her, the Telegraph reports.

The back of his head hit her face and she suffered a brain injury, partially paralysing her and breaking her nose and teeth.

Ms Orchard has been unable to return to work and said she still suffers seizures following the incident, which she said changed her life forever.

She took her case to London’s court of appeal, but Lord Justice Waller, Lord Justice Rimer and Lord Justice Aikens have reserved their decision regarding compensation to a later date.

Anyone who suffers a personal injury as a result of an accident that was not their fault should seek legal action within three years of the event in order to be eligible for compensation.

Woman in gall bladder blunder ‘could receive compensation’

October 14th, 2008

Woman in gall bladder blunder could receive compensation

A woman who had her healthy gall bladder removed after a hospital blunder could receive hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation should she decide to sue, it has been reported.

The unnamed patient went into St Mary’s Hospital in London – where health minister Lord Ara Darzi works – to have a gynaecological procedure, but was instead taken into an operating theatre where a surgeon carried out the wrong procedure.

Hospital staff have now apologised for the "regrettable error", but claim that the organ would probably have had to be removed at a later date anyway, since it was damaged.

Although the woman has not yet taken any legal action over the incident, should she launch a claim for compensation, it could be worth several hundred thousand pounds, experts said.

Victims of wrong diagnosis and other types of malpractice have a legal right to recover their damages from the hospital if it can be found to be responsible, including medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and earning capacity, and more.
