A young woman who was left seriously disabled by a hit and run driver has secured over £1 million in compensation.
Katrina Connolly, now 20, was hit by a car she claims was being driven by Andrew Palma in 2004, the Manchester Evening News reports.
He left the scene and although he later admitted that he had no insurance, he denied being the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Katrina sustained injuries that led to permanent mobility problems, memory lapses and cognitive problems and she now needs daily assistance from carers.
Her mother Patricia took her daughter’s case to the high court and has now secured a payout of £1 million, as well as £40,000 a year to help cover Katrina’s care.
"It means Katrina can get her own flat with carers to help her. She won’t have to worry about money and can concentrate on getting her life back on track," she commented.
According to the Motor Insurers Bureau, three people every hour are injured by uninsured and hit and run drivers across the UK.

A boy who was left with serious head injuries after being involved in a road accident is to receive compensation.
Michael Cleeve, then 12, was walking across a pedestrian crossing in Titchfield in 2007 when he was hit by a car being driven by David Kelly, Portsmouth local paper The News attests.
He had to be put on a spinal board and was in hospital for almost two months. The teenager now suffers from poor concentration and "an impaired sense of danger" as a result of the injuries he sustained.
With the help of his family, Michael is suing Mr Kelly in order to cover his future lost earnings
In a new development at the high court this week, the driver’s insurers admitted 50 per cent liability, a decision which will allow the court to decide how much money Michael will receive in compensation, Mrs Justice Swift said.
Anyone who has been hurt in a road traffic accident should be aware that it will always be the responsible party’s insurers who will pay out, or in the event that they do not have insurance, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau.

A law expert has warned people in the UK that they may not get the compensation they deserve after a road accident if they simply pursue their claim through an insurance company instead of seeking legal advice.
At a recent event hosted by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, the organisation’s president Amanda Stevens said that while a solicitor will work with the victim to make sure a fair outcome is reached, insurance companies will mostly want to get the claim processed quickly, the Liverpool Post reports.
She brought up the example of a woman who was offered £1,000 by her insurance company after a car crash, but realised after consulting her solicitor that she could receive a sum 1,000 per cent higher than this.
Simon Shaw, a solicitor in Liverpool, added: "The only way to ensure you will achieve full recognition and just compensation for the injuries you have sustained is to take independent legal advice from a recognised solicitor."
All personal injury claims must be lodged within three years of an accident or the victim will lose their right to bring about a claim.

An employee who was hurt while lifting heavy materials has received a compensation payout.
Gerard Mayne, 55, was working as a mechanical fitter at Eastman Chemicals in Cumbria when he tried to move a stainless steel machine cover weighing half a ton.
He slipped a disc in his back and subsequently took legal action against the company for his injury, which left him unable to get out of bed for a long period.
"It was so heavy and there were no purpose-built running beams or an electric lift which would have made the job easier and less hazardous," Mr Mayne explained.
Although Eastman Chemicals initially denied liability, but after Mr Mayne initiated court proceedings, the firm accepted and has agreed to pay him compensation of £10,000.
All firms will be covered by standard public liability insurance, which will pay out if an injury occurs to a member of the public or the workforce.
