The generation of people left disabled by the drug thalidomide have launched a fresh bid for compensation with the backing of former newspaper editor Sir Harold Evans.
Although the victims, who were born with shortened limbs and other health problems after their mothers took the drug for morning sickness, receive £18,000 a year from a trust fund set up by the drug company, they believe this should be doubled.
This is because the victims are ageing and facing additional expenses associated with their health problems, for example, a need to buy specially-adapted motorized wheelchairs.
"We’re asking the government to look at our financial plan and improve it so we can live an independent life with dignity," said Nick Dobrik, a thalidomide victim at the helm of the campaign.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health insisted that the trust fund is sufficient and said it will have paid out £150 million by 2037.
Thalidomide was first developed in Germany in 1957 and although fears over its safety led to it not being licensed in the US, this was not the case in Britain. It was withdrawn in 1961 after the catastrophic birth defects became obvious.

The parents of a man who died when a van knocked him off his bike have launched legal action against the driver of the vehicle.
Anthony Maynard, 25, was killed near South Oxfordshire in July 2008 when the van being driven by Michael Large collided with his bicycle, Get Reading reports.
He died instantly and his parents David and Susan believe Mr Large was responsible for the accident because he was driving negligently.
"I am very disappointed [that] after 13 months neither the motorist nor his insurers have admitted liability. It is now therefore necessary to issue civil proceedings," Mr Maynard senior remarked.
If it can be proved that Mr Large made an error that led to the crash, the victim’s parents will receive a compensation payout for their loss.
Last month, an unnamed cyclist was awarded £5,000 in compensation after being knocked off his bike. He suffered minor injuries and post-traumatic stress following the incident.

The family of a woman who died in hospital is to launch legal action against the NHS trust they hold responsible.
Shirley Kane, 71, was taken to City Hospital in Winson Green after complaining of abdominal pain, the Birmingham Post attests.
Medics put her pain down to a bowel obstruction or food poisoning and admitted her to a ward.
However, she was actually suffering from a twisted bowel, which can cause life-threatening infections such as blood poisoning or septicaemia and needs immediate surgery.
Indeed, Ms Kane did contract gangrene, which was only diagnosed and operated on two days after she was admitted.
Although doctors removed six feet of infected bowel, the patient died three weeks later and her widower James Kane said he intends to sue the hospital.
"The family plans legal action. Not for the money, but because it is the only way to make the hospital take notice," he commented.

A couple from the UK who were injured in a jeep crash while on holiday are launching a claim for compensation.
Gagandeep and Jasmail Singh were on holiday in Turkey last August when the jeep they were in as part of a guided safari swerved to avoid another vehicle and crashed, the Hounslow Guardian reports.
Two people were killed and Mr Singh suffered a broken nose and cheekbone, a fractured jaw and broken teeth.
He had to be hospitalised in Turkey and is still receiving treatment in the UK for his injuries.
"I am extremely thankful to be alive, but it has been a very traumatic experience," he commented.
The couple have now launched legal action against their tour operator, which has not yet been named.
Tourists from the UK who suffer from an accident while on holiday can sue their tour operator provided that the holiday was a package which includes travel and accommodation.

A woman who was knocked down by a mobility scooter is considering launching legal action against the driver.
Margaret Scott, 53, was walking in the town centre of Melksham when she was hit by the vehicle, thisiswiltshire.co.uk reports.
She was knocked to the ground and suffered a fractured collarbone, as well as cuts and bruises.
The man who hit Ms Scott left the scene and consequently, police have been unable to prosecute him because of the Data Protection Act.
Ms Scott said she is considering seeking the advice of a solicitor in order to make a personal injury claim.
"I’m just worried that if this was to happen to an elderly person or a child then the outcome could have been even worse," she commented.
People who feel that they may be entitled to damages should seek legal representation as soon as possible as there is a time limit of three years on personal injury claims.
