Employee receives 𧴰k compensation for heel injury

A man who injured his heel after slipping on a wet ladder has been awarded £120,000 in compensation.

The unnamed 60-year-old from Gateshead was using a ladder to access his van’s roof rack in February 2007. However, the ladder was slippery and he fell off it, breaking his heel.

He was in a plaster cast for four months after the accident and took legal action against his employer with help from the trade union Unite.

The Newcastle-based company admitted liability for failing to provide safe access to their vehicles in wet weather and agreed to the out-of-court settlement.

A Unite spokesperson said: "If the ladder had been fitted with anti-slip runs then this accident may have been avoidable."

All workers have a right to work in places where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled. The primary responsibility for this is down to the employer.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents claims it has the responsibility for reducing the 36 million working days lost to work-related accidents and ill health each year.

Woman hit by bus ‘in line for compensation’

Woman hit by bus in line for compensation

A woman who suffered a permanent brain injury when she was hit by a bus is in line to receive compensation after a court ruling.

Judith Trundley, now 66, was crossing a road in Haymarket, Newcastle in 2005 when she was knocked down, according to reports in the Journal Live.

She suffered a fractured skull and completely lost her sense of taste and smell, as well as experiencing dizzy spells.

Ms Trundley launched legal action against Arriva North East, claiming that driver Douglas Hayton was responsible for her injurues.

In a new development, a court has now decided that Ms Trundley and the driver were jointly responsible, meaning that she will now be in line to receive a compensation payout.

The judge said that had Mr Hayton been driving slower and keeping a better lookout, he would have seen Ms Trundley and avoided her.

"What happened left me unable to do anything easily. I completely lost my independence," said Ms Trundley.

Anyone who is injured as a result of a bus accident or from the driver braking too hard may be entitled to compensation and should seek legal advice.

Worker wins damages after accident leads to back injury

A nursery nurse from the north-east of England has secured compensation after an accident at work left her with serious injuries.

Gillian Scott was awarded a total of £75,000 as a result of the incident. The sum was paid by her former employer the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which describes itself as one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK.

The 42-year-old was carrying a box through a cupboard door in Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary when the contents of the container slipped and caused her to fall and hit a door.

She twisted her back as a result and has had to undergo spinal surgery.

Ms Scott stated: "I was off work for a long time and then had further relapses."

Despite the fact that her employer reduced her hours, she was unable to resume her role and is now considering alternative work.
