Human error in an Essex hospital has led to the wrong patient being operated on, it has been revealed.
Staff at King George Hospital in Goodmayes made the mistake when two patients with the same name were treated on the same ward.
The victim endured a painful lung operation when it should have been given to the other man. It is not yet clear if he will be taking legal action against the hospital.
Joyce Robins, co-director of Patient Concern, commented: "The terrifying thing about this catalogue of disaster is that it is just the tip of the iceberg."
A spokesperson from the Department of Health insisted that patient safety is the NHS’s highest priority and claimed that 93 per cent of those treated are satisfied with their care.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that NHS compensation payouts for clinical negligence had risen by 22 per cent from 2008-09, amounting to some £807 million.

An offshore oil worker is seeking compensation from NHS Grampian, claiming that a ‘botched’ operation on his knee ruined his life.
Davie Jamieson, 54, went into Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen to have an artificial joint fitted into his knee in February 2008, the Press and Journal reports.
However, doctors wrongly fitted the joint to the outer side of his left knee, when he should have been given a full knee replacement.
Mr Jamieson claims this has left him crippled and depressed. He is unable to sit down for long periods and has difficulty sleeping.
The victim claims that the operation was a disaster due to human error and that it would have been fine if he had the correct procedure in the first place. He is seeking a payout from the NHS for the pain and suffering he was caused.
"I feel very angry about what happened to me because doctors ignored me when I told them the pain was coming from the inner side of my knee," he commented.
Earlier this month, the same publication reported that surgical teams at north and north-east hospitals made 1,200 clinical errors between 2004 and 2008.

A mental patient who tried to commit suicide by throwing himself under a train is to receive £400,000 in compensation.
Noel Dawson, 48, had admitted himself to Waterlow Psychiatric unit on Highgate Hill for his own protection in January 2004.
However, he went ‘absent without leave’ on January 13th and threw himself under a Highgate station tube nine days later.
Mr Davison suffered head injuries and a broken pelvis, but survived the attempt on his life.
He sought compensation from Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, claiming that hospital staff had failed to assess his mental state and had failed to protect him from himself by providing a secure unit.
Although the trust refused to admit liability, at a high court hearing this week, it agreed to a compensation payout as an out-of-court settlement.
Marjorie Wallace, founder of the mental health charity Sane, commented: "We hope this will make psychiatric units much more careful in protecting the lives of their patients."
Earlier this month, Get Reading reported that the parents of a man who hung himself after escaping from a supposedly secure medical facility are to seek compensation for their loss.

A man who developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) as a result of using vibrating hand tools for long periods of time has been awarded compensation.
Paul Flintoff, 46, had worked at Tarmac Precast Concrete for 22 years, making casts for the building of tunnels.
However, he began to develop burning sensations and numbness in his hands and was subsequently diagnosed with CTS.
He took legal action against his employer, which admitted liability for not protecting its workers against vibration injuries and agreed to a payout of £18,000.
Mr Flintoff is now worried that he may not be able to find another job after having to leave his old position.
According to the NHS, the carpal tunnel is a small tunnel that runs from the bottom of your wrist to the lower palm.
In the case of CTS, the tunnel shrinks and puts pressure on the median nerve, causing pain and numbness.

A woman whose baby was stillborn has been awarded compensation after hospital staff admitted to failings in his care.
Arlien Middleton’s son Kenneth died in October 2003 at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and letters from doctors revealed that his heart had not been properly monitored, the Aberdeen Press and Journal reports.
Ms Middleton sought compensation from NHS Grampian, claiming that if she and the baby had been properly checked, she could have had an emergency Caesarean and Kenneth may have survived.
After a five-year battle, Ms Middleton was awarded £21,500 in compensation for the pain and suffering she was caused.
"It was never to do with the money. I didn’t care about the money. I just wanted an apology," she remarked.
NHS Grampian declined to comment on the individual case.
Clinical negligence occurs when a professional in the health service provides care that is deemed to be below standard and this causes physical injury, death or distress.
Compensation may be claimed as a result, as was the case here.
