٠k payout for employee injured at work

A woman who was injured after lifting heavy boxes at work has been paid compensation.

Yvonne Parker, 41, strained a muscle in her shoulder while lifting goods at Domnick Hunter Technologies, Sheffield, in 2006.

However, the boxes exceeded health and safety guidelines at 22kg each and Ms Parker said she was not given the appropriate training to do the work.

"My injuries are still causing me pain and discomfort months after they were originally caused at work. After my experiences I want businesses to do more to protect their employees. My accident was preventable," she commented to the Sheffield Telegraph.

Ms Parker has now been paid almost £2,000 in compensation from the company, which she still works for.

According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive, 2.1 million people were suffering from an illness they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work during 2007-08.

Meanwhile, six million working days were lost from workplace injuries during the same period.

Children claim damages for gym roof collapse

Children claim damages for gym roof collapse

A compensation claim has been lodged by two children who were injured during a boxing lesson in 2005.

The pair, who have not been named, were aged ten and 14 at the time and were participating in a lesson from former professional boxer Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham in Rotherham.

However, the roof of the gym collapsed during the session and the children were buried under falling debris, the Sheffield Telegraph reports.

Mr Graham was also trapped in the fall-in and had to be pulled free by rescuers.

The children claim to still be suffering from the after-effects of the incident, including back pain and nightmares.

As a result, they are seeking legal action against Mr Graham.

He argues that the responsibility for the fall-in should lie with the gym’s owners, the Booth family, since he only rented the property.

"I could be seeking compensation myself but haven’t done so yet. I want this sorted out for everyone involved," Mr Graham commented.

Generally acknowledged as one of the best British boxers of the post-war era never to have won a world title, Mr Graham turned professional in 1978.
