Amateur footballer awarded compensation for malicious tackle

A man whose leg was broken as the result of a tackle during a Sunday league football match has been awarded £25,000 in compensation for his injury.

Gary Bailey was playing against Moulsham FC in Essex when Lance Corporal Grant Mackenzie tackled him, the Sun reports.

The referee’s report later described the tackle as "malicious" and Mr Bailey contacted the police on assault charges. Although this was later dropped, Mr Bailey decided to pursue a civil compensation claim against Lance Corporal Mackenzie.

A judge recently decided that Mr Bailey should be eligible for compensation of £25,000 from the soldier.

Solicitor Clare Langford told the Burnley Express last year that anyone who is injured during a football match may be eligible for compensation if the opposing player can be proved to be negligent.

She advised that all amateur players should take out their own insurance in case of such a claim.

Injured soldiers ‘to see compensation doubled’

December 16th, 2008

Injured soldiers to see compensation doubled

Soldiers injured during their time in service are to see the compensation they are paid double after the introduction of new measures by the government.

Previously, payments were made at 100 per cent for the first injury, 30 per cent for the second and 15 per cent for the third, but claims could not be made for any further physical damage suffered.

Claims were also limited to £285,000.

However, the maximum compensation will now increase to £570,000, on top of the monthly, tax-free, index-linked payments that the soldier will receive for the rest of his or her life.

Commenting on the new initiative, defence minister Kevan Jones said: "Our armed forces are inspirational and they deserve the very best support. This increase in our compensation package will be a great boost to our injured personnel and their families."

The payments should begin to come through in the next few days and a spokesperson for the Royal British Legion said the organisation is very pleased with the new development.
