Accident warning as Bonfire Night approaches

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has issued a warning to remind people to take care during Bonfire Night.

It urged those hosting bonfires and fireworks displays to think about the safety of their spectators.

Nicola Butters, RoSPA’s home safety development officer in Scotland, said: "In previous years, about 1,000 people across Britain have had to go to hospital because they’ve been injured by a firework during the four weeks around Bonfire Night.

"Nearly half of such injuries are sustained at family or private parties."

She added that only adults should be allowed to set off fireworks and people needed to factor in the possibility of wet and windy conditions.

In another accident-prevention tip, the RoSPA urged party organisers not to use petrol or paraffin to light bonfires, but to stick to fire lighters instead.

The Liverpool Echo has reported that police are to man a fire engine in the city on Bonfire Night in an attempt to cut down on anti-social behaviour related to the event.

Partner completes the Edinburgh Marathon

June 1st, 2009

Simon Wise, Partner of Pryers Solicitors LLP was delighted to finish the Edinburgh Marathon this weekend.

This was Simon's first attempt at completing the 26.2 mile distance.  Tourists and locals were enjoying the weather conditions which saw temperatures sourinto the mid 20's, however for the marathon runners this resulted in a much higher demand on the drinks stations located along the course.

By the time Simon reached the 16 mile marker the water station was empty.  He, and his fellow runnershad to keep going for a further 5 miles until, much to their relief, water was being handed out by charitable spectators.

Further campaigns for justice after separate race crash

August 8th, 2008

The organisers of the Isle of Man TT races are facing further legal action from another man who was injured while watching the 2007 Senior Race.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the widow of Marc Ramsbotham – who was killed riding his motorbike at the 26th Milestone – is considering taking further action against the officials for not protecting the safety of her husband and spectators.

This week, it emerged that Andy Green from Derbyshire is campaigning for justice after he was hurt in a separate accident.

Mr Green was a spectator at Cross Four Ways when a competitor hit a kerb and crashed into him, Isle of Man Today reports.

His leg was broken above the ankle so badly that the bone protruded and he spent nine weeks in hospital after being airlifted back to Derbyshire.

Mr Green is now pursuing further action after it emerged that standard claims for compensation are not recognised on the island.

"I’ve lost £8,000 to £9,000 minimum in lost earnings. We are not asking for the earth, just the money that we have lost," he commented.ADNFCR-1694-ID-18723344-ADNFCR

Widow may sue over accident that killed husband

August 6th, 2008

A widow has announced she may take legal action after a crash which killed her husband.

Marc Ramsbotham, a motorcycle racer from the small Norfolk village of Spooner Row, died while competing in an Isle of Man TT race in June last year.

The incident also took the lives of two spectators.

During an inquest into the deaths earlier this year, coroner Michael Moyle attacked the management and safety of the races.

He added that there had been "considerable and wholesale failings" in the safety system at the race event, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reports.

Meanwhile, Ms Ramsbotham has revealed she has approached a legal expert about the possibility of launching legal proceedings.

She said: "I am going to look into what the options are and am taking legal advice.

"I have approached a solicitor and will see what advice they give me before deciding what to do next."
