1 in five young motorists driving without insurance

A new report has discovered that as many as one in five young people is driving without the correct level of insurance.

The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) found that 250,000 people aged between 17 and 20 are taking to the roads without cover, putting insured drivers at risk if they are hit.

Many young people claimed they did not know that insurance is a legal requirement, while others said that the high cost of insurance has led to them breaking the law.

Ashton West, chief executive of the MIB, commented: "While we recognise the financial pressures for drivers taking to the roads for the first time, it is also a criminal offence to drive without proper insurance cover."

The MIB was established to deal with cases stemming from uninsured driver accidents and manages over 30,000 claims from people who have been hit by someone without cover every year.

Anyone involved in such an accident may wish to seek legal advice, as motoring claims can be complicated and lengthy.

Road accident victim secures damages

A man who was involved in a road accident eight years ago has been awarded compensation.

Police administrator Chris Chambers sustained fractures to his right leg, forearm and wrists, ligament damage to his knee and cuts and bruises to his neck, chest and face when he was struck by an uninsured driver in December 1999.

The motorist in question was travelling on the wrong side of the road when the collision occurred, the Star reports.

Mr Chambers, who required extensive medical treatment for his injuries, had now been awarded £90,000 by the Motor Insurance Bureau, which was established in 1946 to compensate the victims of uninsured and untraced drivers.

The 34-year-old stated: "My medical situation has continued to impact on my life due to the need for multiple operations and long-term rehabilitation."

Meanwhile, the other motorist was issued a fine after being convicted of driving without due care and attention.

Paralysed man awaits judge ruling on compensation

July 8th, 2008

A man who was paralysed after being involved in an accident on a Devon road is awaiting the outcome of his multi-million-pound compensation claim.

James Pankhurst was paralysed from the neck down following the accident and now has to use a wheelchair he controls with his chin and tongue.

The 53-year-old was riding his bike near Farley Farm, Trusham, when he was hit by an uninsured driver in a car without valid MoT, reports the Express & Echo.

In 2006, Lee Martin White of Exeter was ruled to be 100 per cent responsible for the accident.

Mr Pankhurst will receive £260,000, index-linked, for the rest of his life to cover the costs of his care. He is waiting for a judge to rule on a lump sum his lawyers are calling for.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, more than 15,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents in the UK every year.
